Reality Therapy

Dr.William Glasser founded The William Glasser Institute in 1967 in Los Angeles.  Though Reality Therapy was born in the United States, the activities of the Institute are now International.  Reality Therapy is a method of counselling, based on Choice Theory, which is highly focused and interactive.

Choice Theory contends that the only person's behaviour people can control is their own.  By using this theory, I can help people learn that what they do is not determined by external causes, but instead by what goes on inside of them.

The core of Reality Therapy is the idea that regardless of what has happened to you, what you may have done, or how your needs may have been unmet or violated in the past, to be happy and effective you must live and plan in the present.

Addiction Counselling

Addiction is a recognised illness, which is treatable.  Treatment is based on the 12 Step Programme which is a tool to self-discovery.  Through one-to-one counselling sessions combined with attendance at a self-help group I can assist you to clarify how you can best fulfil your needs;  to evaluate your own behaviour, to gain insight into addiction, and to make positive and need satisfying choices both now and in the future.

By you being honest, open and willing you can learn to live without the use of alcohol or mood altering drugs and maintain a happy and fulfilled life!

By setting yourself goals to work towards you can begin to rebuild your life.

"If you don't know where you're going, you're sure to end up someplace else."
Yogi Berra

Family Therapy

Addiction is often referred to as a family illness.  When a family member is addicted, it can affect others in the family unit.  Consequently, communication between family members can break down and become strained.  It is possible for you to help yourself and your addicted family member.

Do not CAUSE it

Cannot CONTROL it

Cannot CURE it

I am able to work with you to help enable you to gain an understanding of addiction, find out who you are, what your needs and wants are, and how to meet them.

 Aftercare

When recovery is established abstinence from all mood altering chemicals is an ongoing process.  It involves much more than stopping using alcohol or mood altering drugs, it requires a change in thinking and attitude.  This process requires maintenance and self-care on a daily basis.

Both relapse and relapse prevention are major issues when in recovery.

You may be in recovery and know you cannot use any mood altering chemicals.  Other things can have a sneaky way of becoming mood altering "fixes."  Things people often use for "fixes" include relationships, sex, food, gambling and shopping.  I can assist you in consolidating your recovery by helping you construct a realistic plan that includes you identifying triggers that could possibly lead to relapse in order to maintain long-term recovery.
